The image to the right is of the Calvert Family crest obtained by
Fred Calvert in the early 1970's. It is similar to the crest shown
on the family tree, however the inscription on the back states
"Calvert of Manchester", which seems to be at odds with what we know about the birthplaces of George and Matthias. More research is obviously required.
This crest was produced by Heraldry Studios Ltd in Auckland.
The formal description of the arms (shield) is noted as..
"or six gouttes, three, two & one gules within a bordure azure
charged with eight owls argent".
The motto DOMINO DOMUS HONESTANDA" can be translated as
"the master of the house must be honoured".
The sentiment is thought to be part of an address by Cicero the Roman Statesman in 44 BC where he argued that true dignity and social standing should come from a person's own character and actions, rather than just the wealth or grandeur of the property they inhabit.
